70’s Belle’s

30 11 2011

The 70’s were ALL about Big hair & I love me some big hair!

From my previous post you can see I have been rocking some really big hair. Update!………………… I absolutely LOVE it! I will “love it long time”.

I have been asked what it is and the assumption is always that it is kinky bulk that is commonly found in Kenya & is mostly twisted.

The answer to that is NO. It is strictly TressFreedom Kinky Bulk hair (you can also pull it off with our kinky weave)
The commonly found Kinky Bulk Will not achieve the same results. It is too Rough to the touch to be left un-twisted; If cut, begins to unravel; does not have an in built curl/wave pattern and Gloss; is much harder to un tangle & will not last long in a similar state.

I was @ the stall today & this is how I rocked my Hair! (PICS courtesy of my beloved CrackBerry!)

Top- Wet Seal 100% cotton vest find them @ LED Vintage Store $ 3 (Ksh 300)
Shoes- Nova’s Dream Shoe Collection.

(If u are wondering, Nova is my sister & mostly comments on my blog as “Atieno”. She has amazing shoes! Most of them are Sky high -Cannot even walk on them- heals , there are very Few flat ones! I stumbled upon these ones recently & absolutely love them. Sooo comfortable they are!)

In the Pic above, I tamed the hair with pins.
If u are not aware, the pic above is 2 bags of Kinky bulk on my head.

If you take advantage of the basic laws of physics, 1.5 bags or less of kinky bulk hair + strategic placing + a small trim should lead to this picture I stumbled upon online.

Now MY hair, I will keep for quite a while. It will probably get shorter as I groom it until it resembles this awesome do my BFF in the South of our continent is currently rocking!

ITS 70'S ALL THE WAY......

Speaking Again of Big Hair!
My customers (angel, janet o; stella m & 2 other ladies) who are the only people rocking this hair do in Nairobi
…………….

Should totally think of taking the Instant Weave/Half wigs to be set with medium rollers to achieve this 70’s Fab look that Beyonce had @ a concert recently.

FYI – IT is christmas soon & those people that know they can make it happen should probably see about getting me the “Beyonce in Rose Land” Dvd that came out last week………………..

Adios Kisumu: Till December!

24 11 2011

I am back in Nairobi after an “interesting” trip yesterday.

I want to do a last post on Kisumu town.

Walking into Kisumu is like walking into a town in Africa in 1970. Nothing much has changed (with regard to the buildings)

I love the slow pace that is Kisumu town the people (even the asian /Chinese or korean/ lady who owns the hardware store across from KWA who just HAD to touch my hair & kept giggling & insisted that I pose for a picture with her???). I love the complete lack of traffic.

Kisumu is pretty hot! I mean one can easily become a nicely baked turkey in there!

Skirts! Lots of flowy skirts are a great way to cool down..

Opting to Wear a skirt as a dress is also another way to change up your look, were u to say, find that your house help has washed ALL your clothes out of the blue.

Blue Skirt WAS 600 @ the254Dword sale-not 4 sale...:)

Blue Skirt WAS 600 @ the254Dword sale-not 4 sale…:)

Dress is NOW ksh 600 @ the LED Vintage store.

Dress is NOW ksh 600 @ the LED Vintage store.

The254Dword is a great example of how one can get amazingly priced clothes without difficulty yet stylish @ the same time. Check out their facebook page http://www.facebook.com/the254dword

The last sale was a great success! The next bigger better one is scheduled for December 16th – 18th.

If You desire fashionable & modern items NOW, you can find select styles that LED Vintage bought from the last d word sale (ksh 800-1000). They are located at Market Center Stalls: Ground floor, Stall A4.
(Muindi mbingu street). This is also the same place TressFreedom products can be found.

Speaking of TressFreedom,I have fallen madly in-love with my hair! I get VERY FREQUENT (mostly dis approving or primitive) stares as I walk down the street. I see myself as Captain Big Hair! Sent from planet Tress to emancipate the people from the constrictions put on them by a misguided status quo.

So! Apart from spending time on swings, bike ridding with my son, visiting friends, Selling TressFreedom products, eating tons of papaya & sleeping, I was also in Kisumu for Work. I spent a few hours in meetings with some “important people”

I wore this on Day 2 of the meeting

Similar Top + Skirt can be bought @ Led Vintage (Shoes were from NOVA's Dream shoe collection)

I also spent time scouting for beautiful locations along the Kisumu beach line

I strongly suggest u visit or increase your visitations to this small town that has captured my heart

Remember to – pick a fro, not a fight.

Holding my End of a Bargain- In Kisumu (Part One & Part Two)

20 11 2011

I promised a post ago, that I would embrace as my next protective style, a huge afro.

I think my words were ……..”Watch this space”.

But first thing first. As I write this Blog from my phone, I am Currently in Kisumu consulting as a liaison for my boss & hubby.

I love Kisumu!

Its is a perfect amalgamation of old colonial little town architecture and new world convenience.

After living abroad for a while I feel I can appreciate the town a bit more than most!

I love that in Kisumu, my dad built a small space just for me! & I love my country bed sheets.

One of my fave romance novels of all time.(top 5)

One of my fave romance novels of all time.(top 5)

I love Kisumu so much, I wan’t to buy property on the hills overlooking lake victoria & set up my fortress of “paradise” there.

The views of the lake , I hear, are simply magnificent and property values are sky rocketing.

one of the many hills

one of the many hills

We arrived on Friday night and first thing saturday morning, I went on a quest to micro braid my hair.

From my previous post u know I have recently been rocking this wig

TRESSFREEDOM IMAN WIG : KSH 2800

TRESSFREEDOM IMAN WIG : KSH 2800

What you don’t know is underneath that sophisticated illusion was my natural un-kemp hair

@ A SALON THAT WAS CHARGING KSH 1500 TO BRAID! IN KISUMU!!! I WALKED AWAY...

@ A SALON THAT WAS CHARGING KSH 1500 TO BRAID! IN KISUMU!!! I WALKED AWAY…

Yep! i have soo mistreated my baby!

Yep! i have soo mistreated my baby!

I left the Salon in the Kisumu CBD because of their ridiculous price! (Ksh 1500) & wandered on to cheaper pastures.

I bought sunglasses for ksh 150 from Omosh

I then called my cousin who gave me a great lead! Emily 0716680662 was available & would braid me for only ksh 500! Yippie!

It was 10 am, so I swaggered on from Barclays bank to a community of saloons across from KPLC kisumu.

They washed & lightly blow dried my hair in under 30 minutes for Ksh 150.

10:45 found me walking from Kplc to Swan Center to “laughing Buddha” for a quick but filling samosa snack for Ksh 150.

Emily called @ 1pm. I had a choice to either go to Nyawita where she lived, or pick her up & take her to Kisian where I lived in order for her to braid my hair.

She is a mobile saloonist you see..:)

I opted to climb a motorcycle taxi & go to Nyawita. Nyawita is a typical low income neighbourhood in Africa. Poor roads, Scary structures meant to be homes, bad plumbing, poor garbage system. Awesome People, Great food.

Nyawita (see my Taxi ridding off)

Nyawita (see my Taxi ridding off)

We used the TRESSFREEDOM kinky Bulk hair. She braided but an inch, tied a knot, and left the rest of the kinks out in order for my hair to resemble a mane.

This is how it turned out

The kinky extensions are light, easy to wash, dry in less than 30 mins, and do not tangle easily. Less than a dozen left in black @ 700. U will need two for a full look. One if you want a really short look

Sunday I went back to Nyawita for Emily to complete her installation of my kinky extensions & get the hair Cut.

This is how it turned out……..

After Kibuye we went to a street vendor who makes awesome chilled fruit.

IMAN- The question of Vesatility

16 11 2011

Here is how our TressFreedom IMAN half wig/ Instant Weave looks on a regular day.

Scheen of Closet49 Rocking our Iman

Scheen of Closet49 Rocking our Iman

This week, as an afterthought, I styled it this way….

I was busy congratulating myself on my ingenuity when I saw this picture in my BB album and realised I probably got my inspiration from it…..

.

So Ladies! Be innovative. Play with the versatility of your TressFreedom Wig! One extension should convert into several looks!

In Other News……………… Under my TressFreedom wig are my natural kinks that desperately need attention.

Solange's Natural Kinks

Solange’s Natural Kinks

Solange’s hair up top is probably the current length of my kinks (but I am NOT about to show you! Its all horrid’ in there)

.I am still trying to make time for my next protective style using the TressFreedom Kinky extensions knowing it can do THIS………..

I intend to use my vast knowledge of the laws of matter & physics to morp the Kinky extensions from looking like the picture above into looking like this lovely belle’s hair below.

Watch This Space

13 11 2011

I have a confession to make……

I am ashamed to say that after my post “decision decisions”, I am still to protectively style my hair.

My hair is currently such an ugly mop of disrepair, I CANNOT so much as dare to show u what’s going on under my wigs action.

I definitely intended to do something this week with the TressFreedom Kinky weave/ Bulk.

Now my sister………… Voted for semi permanent bantu knots & I was going to use the Kinky extension to create a mohawk like look…..(Longer in the middle)

Today, as I was spending time with my hubby & son & browsing twitter; Franklin of @kenyanstylista decided to throw this picture my way and I simply died!

I am NOTHING if not a member of team #BIGHAIRLOVE. In addition, one thing I love is a challenge! So NOVA luv……..uuuummmm bantu knots will have to wait till december vacay……..

The trick to reconciling the 1st picture and achieving results similar to the picture above is deciphering the simple laws of physics.

Rubbing hands in anticipation………….
Encore of that picture…….
